PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A. is a leading company on the Polish renewable energy market. The company provides services
supporting the security of the national electricity system, and generates and supplies electric energy produced with the use of environmentfriendly technologies based on renewable sources of primary
energy. Ever since it appeared on the Polish electricity market, the company has consistently invested in new renewable energy sources and environmental education. The company’s efforts are aimed at
keeping its leading position in the renewable energy sector through successive investments in energy generation from water and wind power and the expansion of its activity in the area of biogas-based
Water power is now the largest source of renewable energy. Its potential is estimated at up to 2000GW. PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A. has significant achievements in the area of energy production from water power. PGE Group has 29 water power stations with a total generating capacity of 1,577MW. They are located on the Odra, San, Bóbr, Soła and Nysa Łużycka rivers. Among these power stations are four pumped storage plants, including two with natural stream flow, and 25 run-of-the-river plants.
Wind power is potentially an important source of environment-friendly electricity for the Polish electric power system. It is an important segment of the renewable energy sector with a large potential for development. PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A. is one of the owners of the 30MW Kamieńsk Wind Park. The park is composed of 15 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2MW, and is being expanded by another 18MW. The wind park is situated on the artificial Kamieńsk hill near the town of Bełchatów, central Poland. It is the first project of this kind carried out by PGE Group. In 2009 PGE Energia Odnawialna bought Elektrownia Wiatrowa Resko Sp. z o.o., the company set up to develop a wind farm near the town of Resko, north-western Poland. The wind farm will have a capacity of 90MW and will be located on the territory of three rural districts. PGE also carries out a programme to build off-shore wind farms.
Biomass is the renewable energy source which offers the greatest potential now. Biomass may be used for energy generation purposes in the process of direct combustion of solid and gaseous biofuels or may be converted into liquid fuels for electricity and heat production. The company has initiated the programme entitled “The Use of Biomass for Energy Purposes.” Under the programme, PGE Energia Odnawialna is to work together with provincial authorities, associations of communes, local communities and businesses interested in developing heat generating plants fired by biomass. PGE Energia Odnawialna has already launched five greenfield biogas plant projects and carries out two projects where existing facilities have been bought. Additionally, biogas projects will also be carried out through special-purpose companies.
